Deep ruby garnet in colour, the nose is perfumed with layers of cedar wood, white pepper, black olive and clove which compliment notes of black plum, prune and mulberry fruit with a seem of blackcurrant. Elegant, dried cranberry on the palate moving into rich plum flavours supported by hints of cassis and perfumed, sweet tobacco leaf lingering with a finish that is long and structured.

Grapes for this wine were sourced in two parcels – the first from Stellenbosch, which was fermented in stainless steel tanks, the second, from the Swartland, was fermented in older French oak barrels. These components were then blended together to create a deliciously fresh, fruit forward chenin.

Rich, concentrated aromas of black, ripe fruit, candied peel, rose petals and sweet spice with a hint of tobacco leaf and menthol. The palate is complex with ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, fine tannins and notes of black pepper. Elegant and long.

Twenty year old vines from their the Morandina vineyard near the Lessini mountains is at 450 metres altitude. Soils are limestone, calcareous and the site has a south-easterly exposure.It is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, plus a tiny bit of Oseleta, the vine shoots are cut allowing the grapes to dry for a month on the vine before harvesting. After fermentation the wine is aged for 18 months in barrel.

Casa Althay is a relatively new winery built in the heart of La Geria, just outside the village of Uga on the island of Lanzarote. They work with traditional viticulture including many of the craters, which lie next to the winery itself. The wines combine a beautiful creamy textural element with a saline, mineral precision. Their wines are of exceptionally high quality and complex character.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the most elegant, polished wines in this range. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and cedar are beautifully lifted. The tannins are remarkably polished for a young, recently bottled Riserva. I admire its poise and elegance. This is an especially refined edition of the Montestefano. In 2020, the mix of vineyards is a bit younger than in the past, as one of the blocks of older vineyards was replanted and not used. If I could have only one of the Riservas in 2020, this would be it!

Deep and complex aromas of blackberry, rose petals, sweet spice and balsamic glaze. Juicy, rich and full bodied with lots of flavour. Morello cherry, cranberry, liquorice and ground white pepper with a backbone of vibrant acidity and grippy tannins.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is gorgeous. It offers a beguiling mix of intense fruit and supporting structure. A wine of depth and complexity, Asili has a lot of everything. It is clearly a step or two above many of the wines in this range. Today, the 2020 comes across as a bit somber, but that may partly be a reflection of its recent bottling. There is gorgeous depth and resonance in the Asili.

Intense aromatics with flavours of pears, grapefruit, melon, and gooseberry. Brilliant minerality and lemony acidity. Complex and juicy. Lingering finish reminiscent of lemony creams.

Fun Fact:  Weissburgunder (/vīs-bur-gūn-dur/) is another grape of the pinot family which originated in Burgundy, France. For that reason, the German word “burgunder” is used to mean pinot in the same sense French and English speakers use it. “Weiss,” like “blanc” in French or “bianco” in Italian, is the German word for the colour white. So Weissburgunder is the German name for Pinot Blanc/Bianco.

Rainbow's End estate is a small family farm on the slopes of the Jonkershoek Mountain overlooking the Banghoek Valley of Stellenbosch. 

A perfumed nose, with notes of wet stone. The perfect balance of sweet mulberry, red cherry and strawberry fruit, with some herbal (Eucalyptus and Pine) undertones, and a lovely lifted finish. This is beautifully balanced and delicious, and will be even more so in 3-5 years’ time.
