Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla is located in the historic centre of Jerez. Its story began with the aristocratic Andrada-Vanderwilde family, who for two centuries provided grapes and wine for the production of sherry in the area. In 1972 Fernando Andrada-Vanderwilde took over some old sherry cellars and brandy soleras from a couple of local bodegas, and changed the name of the company from Fernando III to Fernando de Castilla.

Grapes are sourced from Fernando de Castilla's partners vineyards in the Jerez district. The soil type is Albariza. Picking takes place in early September. Oloroso typically comes from the second pressing of the grapes or the coarser wines. This wine does not spend any of its life under flor and is fortified in the February after harvest to 18% abv. This is then added to the first Criadera of the Oloroso Solera. The Antique Oloroso is bottled without blending, cold stabilization or filtration of any kind in order to preserve the subtlety, purity and distinctive aromas. On average this wine is 20 years old.

A much warmer site than ‘Clos Les Bussieres’, ‘Les Caraby’ is a small 1 hectare ‘clos’ tagged on to the end of Mercurey’s most famous premier cru, ‘Clos du Roy’. Almost always the first vineyard picked, this is a fast ripening site with its own little valley of both north and south facing vines. This vintage has produced a really well balanced wine with ripe tropical fruits jumping out of the apple and citrus background. Really good texture and weight. No new oak was used in this vineyard. The grapes come from different locations on the island: La Geria, Masdache, and an estate located in Tisalaya. This wine is meant to reflect the island, its diverse landscapes, and the work of the different vine growers on their small plots, with vines from 10 to over 100 years old utilised.

A variety of production methods were used here, from direct pressing to maceration with skins, depending on the state of the grapes (health and ripeness). Some batches, after temperature controlled alcoholic fermentation with natural yeasts, underwent malolactic fermentation. Ageing is in stainless steel, resting for 10 months on lees, and bottles without filtration.

A brilliant Petit Chablis - ripe and untouched by oak. Showing all the characteristics of the terroir, as well as lemony freshness and vivacity, underpinned by tight minerality.

So Weissburgunder is the German name for Pinot Blanc/Bianco.

Readers will find a rich, flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here, but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks, graphite, lavender, blackberry, plum, and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all, the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent, dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it. Drink 2021-2036.

Jable de Tao is winemaker Carmelo Peña's expression of the Lanzarote island. A field blend of four native varieties (Malvasía Volcanica, Listán Blanco, Listán Negro and Diego) from a variety of soils and aspects. Carmelo’s intention is to bottle the nuanced terroirs of Lanzarote under a unique wine. The wine is direct pressed into barrel, concrete tanks and large foudres, where it ferments and ages. The wine has hints of lemony cream on the nose followed by limes and green apples. On the palate, it is textured and creamy with hints of lemon rind and a long, saline, mineral finish.
