La Lagune is the leading Classified Growth of the Haut-Médoc but sits just outside the famous communes so you get Third Growth quality without the Margaux or Pauillac premium. The chateau was certified organic in 2016, and 2017 was Caroline Frey’s 14th vintage in charge so she had perfected her approach of organics in the vineyard and a lighter touch in the winery with less new oak used. A must for lovers of classically styled Left Bank claret, the 2017 is comfortably  drinking now, but capable of another decade of ageing in bottle.

Country: France

Region: Bordeaux

Grapes:  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot

ABV: 13.5%

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Bay leaf, menthol and dry earth on the nose – certainly savoury though not green. The palate shows well, with plump and fresh red fruit in a compact but finely etched intensity. The tannins are chalky but fine and ripe, propping up the fruit rather than overwhelming it. This should make for an enjoyable, classic drink in the medium term. Drink 2023-2036.
