The Cirò DOC is a picturesque corner of the Mediterranean, along the Ionian coast, in the eastern foothills of the Calabria region, a large peninsula that forms the toe to Italy’s boot. The Parrilla family, who own and run Tenuta del Conte, have been making wine here for four generations, the latest of which to take over the estate are Mariangela, Giuseppe, and Caterina.

In 2011 Mariangela Parrilla took over as winemaker. Mariangela takes a philosophical approach to winemaking, with the aim to let these traditional indigenous grape varieties speak for themselves and their terroir. Her wines are all organic, no herbicides or chemicals are used at any stage of the production process, she opts for spontaneous fermentations using indigenous yeasts, no filtration, and solely stainless-steel and bottle aging. Taking each wine vintage by vintage she lets them evolve and age “according to their own natural rhythm”, making each wine unique. This could be just one year in bottle before release or over 10 years. Not only does she capture the unique character of the grape variety but that of the vintage it's from too.


Together with a handful of other wineries in the area, Mariangela is part of “The Cirò Revolution”, a group formed to promote and protect their territory’s identity. They are dedicated to organic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, they make traditional wines, in homage to their ancestors, from native grape varieties.

Intense, long, persistent, floral, fruity, with a warming sensation on the palate. Soft, elegant, and concentrated. Very typical of Timorasso, mineral with notes of chamomile, ripe yellow plums, and toasted almond in the finish.

A delicious, slightly off dry Riesling from New Zealand. Concentrated and waxy, with hints of lime juice, stone-fruit, lychees, pineapple and tropical spices. There's a wonderful minerality and tangy acidity on the long finish.

Penny's new obsession is the rare, native grape variety of Nascetta. This beautiful ageworthy white has lemon zest, green pear and white pepper on the nose, with hints of wild fennel and saltiness. A precise and balanced, mouthfilling mid-palate with a long, saline finish.

The rich-styled Malmsey is the most famous of the Madeira grape varietals, located today mostly in the region of São Jorge on the north of the island. The wine is matured in small oak casks, which are naturally heated for 10 years at the Blandy?s Wine Lodges in the centre of Funchal.

A dark, rich, sweet style of wine.

Food Match: Chocolate Torte with vanilla Ice Cream

The nose has layers of citrus and stone fruit aromas, and hints angelica, acacia flower and allspice. Flavours of lemon, yellow apple and nectarine follow through onto an elegant, balanced palate with delicate notes of greengage, papaya, yellow apple and passion fruit. The wine is light to medium bodied, with a fleshy texture and vibrant, integrated acidity.

The blend is composed of signature white varieties from each property: Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Semillon, matured in oak, provides structure and age-worthiness-drawing on Boekenhoutskloof's long-standing reputation for this grape. Old bush vine Chenin Blanc from the Swartland adds depth, texture and opulence, while cool-climate Chardonnay brings lift and precision. Viognier lends a subtle aromatic richness.

Tim Atkin's review: A new addition to the consistently impressive Boekenhoutskloof range, this is a pan-regional blend of Swartland Chenin Blanc complemented by 24% Chardonnay, 19% Semillon and 4% Viognier from elsewhere. Inspired by the whites of the southern Rhône, it's stony, savoury and lightly wooded, with aromas of laurel, thyme and white flowers and a palate of pear, citrus, peach and wet stones. Drink 2026 – 2031

Bright straw yellow colour with golden flecks. On the nose: complex, white floral jasmine notes and minerals. On the palate, it is creamy and savoury, with flavours of ripe pear, herbs and minerality, alongside its crisp acidity.

Located in Fitta, in North West Italy, Suavia is owned and run by the three Tessari sisters: Meri, Valentina and Alessandra.

A spicy nose with vegetal (nettle and mint) and balsamic varietal notes. A balanced structure with good savoury character and fresh acidity. It is produced exclusively in stainless steel to preserve its characteristic fresh notes.

Liatiko is an indigenous Cretan grape variety , light ruby/garent in colour. The nose has a rich, ripe red fruit and sweet spice character. The palate is full, but has very soft tannins. 

Under organic conversion, this is a pale, shimmering ruby, hedonistic, unoaked light -coloured red with gorgeous perfumed, strawberry and raspberry liqueur notes, hints of game and fennel. Plump vibrant fruits, a refreshing thread of fine-pitched acidity, poised slightly grippy yet elegant tannins - hard to resist.

Raspberry red in colour, this grape variety, Otskhanuri Sapere, gives enticing aromas of plums, ripe berries with herbal and floral notes and a hint of balsamic. Full bodied, with balancing fresh juiciness and a long, dry and slightly smoky, earthy finish.

The grapes were carefully sorted in the vineyard and then again upon arrival at the
winery, berry by berry to ensure only the healthy, undamaged and best quality fruit was
vinified. Skin-contact fermentation took place using the traditional Georgian method of
clay jars known as Qvevri. These vessels have been recognised by UNESCO as a
process of important cultural heritage. The Qvevri in the Vachnadziani winery have a
950-litre capacity. The alcoholic fermentation lasted for one week, followed by a
maturation period of five months without skin contact.

Georgia is considered to be the ‘cradle of wine', as 8,000 year-old indigenous Rkatsiteli grape seeds have been found in clay vessels. Vachnadziani was established in 1953 and is one of the oldest wineries in Georgia. During the Soviet years the vineyard fell into disrepair, but now the vineyards and cellars have received considerable investment. The aim is to preserve their ancient wine culture while combining it with cutting edge technology. With over 1,000 hectares of vineyard, covering the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia and the Imereti, Racha and Lechkhumi regions in western Georgia, Vachnadziani cultivates 25 vine varieties - the majority of which are indigenous. Their exciting and dynamic range reveals all the charm of this historic winemaking land.

Such a wonderful expression of the Listán Blanco grape variety, otherwise known as Palomino Fino in mainland Spain and other parts of the world. An aromatic nose, with notes of ripe peach and apricot. Green pear on the palate with a textured, saline, long finish from spending 4 months on its lees.

A beautifully aromatic, ruby red wine, this RiNera has wonderful aromas of red berries, bitter cherries and a touch of spice with green and black pepper. On the palate, it is elegant and bright, slightly tannic with a long, satisfying finish.

‘Ronchi’, in Fruili’s dialect, means hills cultivated by vines; ‘Cialla’ is a small valley surrounded by woods with chestnut, oak, and wild cherry trees. Located in the Cialla valley, one of three sub-zones in Colli Orientali del Friuli, it is a picturesque area with perfect growing conditions for the indigenous grapes. The company philosophy has always been to work solely with indigenous varieties, such as, Ribolla, Refosco, Schioppettino, Verduzzo, and Picolit. In fact, the Rapuzzi Family restored and revitalised the Schioppettino grape from near extinction, defying the odds and local wine laws.

Kisiskhevi is a superb terroir within the wider Kakheti region, particularly for Saperavi. The best grapes are selected for fermentation in Qvevri, resulting in a deep coloured and structured wine that is still remarkably approachable due to its vibrant primary fruit and roasted nut aromas.

On the nose it has creamy black cherry, wood smoke, dried rose petal, incense, wild spice. On the palate it is seductive, lush, minerally, layered and complete, with a multidimensional core, considerable concentration and energy. This is a serious Beaujolais with the finesse and structure of a fine Burgundy.

A traditional Georgian spirit, similar to vodka distilled from the grape pommace (skins and seeds) after harvest and crushing. It is usually drunk neat as a shot to toast during Georgian feast or Supra as it is called in the country.

A lovely pale straw colour. Nose distinctly fresh with hints of peach and lime with a gentle oak influence. The palate has a good weight with some stone minerality and a long finish. Excellent balance between fruit and oak flavours.
