There are many characters in New Zealand winemaking and one of the largest is Duncan Forsyth. Maverick or genius, planting vines in the cold of Otago takes some nerve. These vineyards are on the edge of what is possible, the climate is so marginal. With a biodynamic approach and the reassuring chaos of a smallholding full of pigs and chickens the wines win awards and praise worldwide proving that we should all try to be little bit different. Mount Edward's winemaking approach is traditional, using natural yeasts and minimal intervention at all stages to produce wines which reflect the vintage from which they came. The Central Otago climate and soils are unique with the parent rock being glacially derived schist. Most of the soils having been cultivated only a few times in the 100 years before the viticulturists arrived, and some not at all. The growing season is warm and dry with cool nights. It is a short season however, with a risk of frost early and late and they actively restrict crop levels managing the vine canopy to achieve balance and uniform ripeness regardless of variety

This cool climate Aussie Pinot punches above its weight.

Surprisingly restrained and elegant for what was a warm ripening season. There are layers of complexity here. Lifted aromatics of tart cherry, fresh tobacco leaves and candied ginger, the palate is supported by a fine acidity, gentle tannins & alluring savoury characteristics of dried red earth, leather and pencil shavings.

Pinot Noir is one of Romania’s greatest hidden secrets. Probably the only place in the world that can do this grape variety justice at such brilliant value. The nose is full of summer fruit aroma’s, strawberry, blueberry, and the palate is light and crisp and refreshing with notes of raspberry and cranberry. As you walk through the rolling vineyards of the 700 hectare Cramele Recas estate, two things are inescapable. The first is the scale of the transformation that Englishman Philip Cox and his wife Elvira have managed to achieve, replanting 700 hectares of decrepit vineyards and replacing them with immaculately tended sites the equal of anywhere else in the world. The second is that if you didn't know where you were, you'd be convinced you were in Tuscany or any other "Classic" wine producing region. And, to a certain extent you are, Romania has a history of wine making stretching back millennia and it was this potential that has driven this dynamic duo to dedicate their lives to driving forward Romanian wine making to it's current state of rude health. A 20 million euro investment in the vineyards and brand new winery.

Despite the threat of Phyllloxera and the property narrowly avoiding grubbing up to be used as a permanent dairy farm, the vineyard ultimately prevailed. Rated a 5 star producer by James Halliday, Yering Station create beautiful cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and expands our Australian selection to include one of the best vineyards in Yarra Valley.

Made by traditional Burgundian winemaking methods: the various blocks were picked at different stages. Approximately 1/3 of the grapes were put at the bottom of the fermentation vats as whole bunches, with the balance being destemmed on top. When fermentation completed, the grape remnants were left to steep in the wine for up to a week, followed by gentle pressing and transfer to oak barriques (40% new). Following a natural malo-lactic fermentation, and maturation for 18mths, the batches from the many
different plots and clones were carefully blended. The bouquet evokes black cherries, raspberries and mulberries, interlaced with savoury hints of grilled mushrooms, barbequed meats and wood-smoke.

Maison Chanzy is a highly respected Burgundian producer, their wines are a classical demonstration of premium vineyard sites in Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.

Their range has been carefully engineered by winemaker Max Blondelle, whose primary task is to create wines that eloquently communicate their respective terroir, whilst remaining hands-off in his approach. As such, Chanzy are one of the few Burgundy producers to achieve Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3; the most highly regarded certification for agriculture in France.

The 'Clos de Bellecroix' site borders Chagny and faces gently north meaning it’s almost always the last vineyard to be picked. Classic violet and cherry nose. Tightly knit structure, with a seductive mix of crunchy red and black fruits and a touch of balsamic. Lots of aging potential. Drink 2024 to 2030
