Stellenbosch, this famous region, is 30 miles north east of Cape Town yet still close enough to the ocean to benefit from cool maritime conditions. These beautiful vineyards are dominated by scenic mountains and the region is home to some of the Cape`s most famous and influential wine estates. The most noted and important vineyards are located on the prized slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. This small and highly rated sub-zone has fantastic terroir and is where many of South Africa`s top red cuvees are produced.
Angus Paul had their first vintage in 2020, creating wines with a focus on South African Heritage, using Chenin, Muscat and Pinotage soon expanding with Cinsault. The wines are made with minimal intervention to make quality wines that truly express the varieties characteristics. The labels are inspired by the ‘Age of exploration’ when the South African wine industry was founded, with graphics of superstitious tales from exploratory sailors.
Apostoles Palo Cortado 30yo 37.5cl
Regular price £29.95Palo cortado is a special type of sherry that starts its life and maturation under protective flor, destined to become a fino or amontillado.
Partway through the maturation it loses its veil of flor and begins oxidative ageing as an oloroso sherry would.
This combined maturation results in a wine with some of the richness of oloroso and some of the freshness of amontillado. It is a rare beverage though as just 1 to 2% of the grapes pressed for sherry naturally develop into palo cortado.
A very full-flavoured sherry with fruit intensity and concentration on the nose and palate. Lots of dried fruit with light toffee sweetness and oak caramel. Delicious!
Country: Spain
Region: Jerez
Grapes: Palomino and Pedro Ximenez
ABV: 20%

Renowned for their Proseccos and Corvina based reds in particular, they are also involved in a fascinating project in Puglia. During the course of Maurizio's long and illustrious career, he has consulted for well known wineries around Italy and in doing so he came across the vineyards that provide the grapes for their Puglian wines. Both the Pugliese and Veneto wines are characterised by a dangerous drinkability, aromatic purity and exceptional value for money.

Bodegas Viñátigo Vijariego Blanco 2022
Regular price £36.95A very rare grape variety, mostly found in the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife. The vines are 'pie franco' or ungrafted ancient specimens that thus far have managed to avoid the dreaded Phylloxera bug which devastated many European vineyards in the 19th century. The wine is complex, concentrated and flinty with aromas of green herbs, apples and quince. 6 months in barrel and on its lees has given the wine a beautiful texture and long, saline finish.
Country: Spain
Region: Tenerife
Grapes: Vijariego Blanco
ABV: 13.5%
Food Match: Seafood such as grilled prawns and calamari would work well with this wine.
Practicing organic, but not certified.
Boekenhoutskloof Goldmine 2024
Regular price £25.95The nose has layers of citrus and stone fruit aromas, and hints angelica, acacia flower and allspice. Flavours of lemon, yellow apple and nectarine follow through onto an elegant, balanced palate with delicate notes of greengage, papaya, yellow apple and passion fruit. The wine is light to medium bodied, with a fleshy texture and vibrant, integrated acidity.
Country: South Africa
Region: Western Cape
ABV: 14%
Grapes: Chenin Blanc 53%, Chardonnay 24%, Semillon 19%, Viognier 4%
The blend is composed of signature white varieties from each property: Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Semillon, matured in oak, provides structure and age-worthiness-drawing on Boekenhoutskloof's long-standing reputation for this grape. Old bush vine Chenin Blanc from the Swartland adds depth, texture and opulence, while cool-climate Chardonnay brings lift and precision. Viognier lends a subtle aromatic richness.
Tim Atkin's review: A new addition to the consistently impressive Boekenhoutskloof range, this is a pan-regional blend of Swartland Chenin Blanc complemented by 24% Chardonnay, 19% Semillon and 4% Viognier from elsewhere. Inspired by the whites of the southern Rhône, it's stony, savoury and lightly wooded, with aromas of laurel, thyme and white flowers and a palate of pear, citrus, peach and wet stones. Drink 2026 – 2031
