Women in Wine

Celebrating women in our industry

From all parts of the wine business: journalists and educators like Madeline Puck and Jancis Robinson to pioneering winemakers like Samantha O'Keefe of Lismore Wine, Camille Besson of Chablis Besson, Suzaan Alheit of Hemel en Aarde's Alheit Winery and Izele Van Blerk of KWV Mentors. Not forgetting Penny and Geraldine in the Cellar Door Wines shop selling you their amazing wine!

Check out our wonderful range of wine and gift bundles made by female wine makers, in an industry that is still very much male dominated.

Izele Van Blerk - KWV The Mentors range

Winemaker Izele Van Blerk has a BSc degree in Viticulture and Oenology from Stellenbosch and began working at KWV in 2009. Twelve years on and she is heading up the winemaking team for KWV'S premium, multi-award winning range called The Mentors.

Suzaan Alheit - Alheit Wines

Suzaan and Chris Alheit set out in 2011 with the aim of making some of the best white wines in South Africa, many agree they have achieved this already. It is rare for producers to reach cult status almost immediately, which has created a very high demand for their wines....so we're delighted to get our hands on a few cases of their wine!

Danielle Coetsee -  Boschendal Cap Classique Winemaker

From a very young age Danielle's uncle inspired her to become a winemaker with his stories of winemaking and viticulture from the Elsenburg Estate in the Western Cape. Since then, her devotion to the profession has only grown and as a winemaker at Boschendal, she plays a pivotal part in creating the estate’s award-winning vintages.
Before Boschendal, Coetsee was the winemaker and farm manager at a boutique winery in Botriver, Eerste Hoop. Here she claimed a 91-point score for her first vintage wine – a Cape White Blend. Prior to that, she was the assistant winemaker at Noble Hill Wine Estate. In 2020 Danielle was named Woman Winemaker of the Year at the SA Women’s Wine & Spirit Awards.

Camille Besson - Winemaker Chablis Besson

A boutique French winery, Domaine Besson, is family owned and operated by Camille Besson and her brother Adrien, fourth generation winemakers. The estate has 21 hectares of vines that make wines for four Chablis AOC appellations: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru. Adrien is the viticulturalist and vineyard manager while Camille is the winemaker.

Samatha O'Keefe - Lismore Wines

Californian wine pioneer, Samantha O'Keefe has found paradise and the perfect terroir in Greyton, Western Cape, South Africa. Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range in Southern Africa, Lismore Estate Vineyards was born alongside her family. A passionate vision, combined with vines planted at 300 metres, which are chilled by cold winters and nourished by the African sun, produces classic, cool climate wines which are rich, complex and hand crafted with care.
