As the lands starts to rise, inland northwest of Valencia, you will find Roselia Molina heading up Bodegas Altolandon. The property consists of 120 hectares with the winery resting right in the centre, not only making it aesthetically satisfying but also extremely practical. At 1,100 metres above sea level, the altitude serves to benefit the grapes with large diurnal variations which encourage even ripening and also helping retain their natural acidity. Organic methods are used to manage the vines utilising only natural fertilisers and some green pruning to further guarantee the quality of fruit prior to hand-harvesting. The grapes are vinified as naturally as possible with native yeasts and little other intervention. The wines are then aged in French oak and some in clay amphora to retain purity, but build complexity.

Capion Le Songe d’Éocène Rouge 2016
Regular price £75.00The nose is powerful, concentrated and aromatic. The palate has notes of ripe black fruit, sweet spice and mocha which lengthen over silky tannins.
“Aromas of vanilla, grilled plums, violets and crème de cassis soar from the glass, while the palate is full-bodied, concentrated and chewy and loaded with vibrant purple fruit flavor. The tannins mellow on the lingering finish, making it approachable now but suggesting up to a decade (or more?) of prime-time drinking.”

Fermented and matured in amphora this represents a big step up in black pepper spice and grip – always a surprise in a wine that’s never seen a barrel – there is no question that this is a little young at the moment but absolutely worth squirrelling a few bottles away for a couple of years.

Instead you get super bright, silky raspberry notes with some properly exciting acidity – we’re rocking along at 15.5% abv but you’d never know – the thread which starts here and runs through the entire range is one of unadulterated purity and drinkability.
